Sometimes it is hard to be a guy, especially a polite guy.
About a week ago, I stopped by a local coffee shop for a morning cup of joe and a snack.
As I walked to the front door of this coffee shop, a woman happened to approach the door at the same time. I politely opened the door for the woman, as I commonly do.
The woman said “Thank you sweetie” and proceed directly to the counter.
For the next ten minutes, I was forced to stand behind the woman as she asked the coffee shop guy about every single thing on the menu.
“What’s in that? Can I get skim milk with that? How big is the “medium”? What about the large? I’ll take the small. Are these the freshest pastries you have? You’re making more now and they’ll be ready in ten minutes? I don’t know if I want to wait that long. When were these pastries made? Do you have any with blueberry? What’s in the mocha, caramel latte? Can I get that with skim milk? What kind of brewed coffee do you have? I’ll take a large one of those. Actually, make that a small. Are these the freshest pastries you have? I’m not hungry. Thank you sweetie for letting me go in front of you.“
Sigh. “Sure.“
With coffee in hand, the woman paid and moved along.
I approached the counter.
“I’d like a medium coffee and a blueberry muffin please.“
I paid. I moved on to the counter with all the coffee extras like sugar and cream. The woman was already there, adding every single thing to her coffee.
“Where’s the half and half?“ she asked the coffee shop guy.
“It’s in that silver container labeled ‘half and half’,“ responded coffee shop guy, indicating the large container just to the right of the woman’s coffee cup.
“Thanks hun.“
After stirring what would have to be the most disgusting combination of sugars, cocoa powder, cinnamon and cream, the woman replaced her lid and moved on.
I added cream to my cup, said good-bye to the coffee shop guy and left.
And that’s how my 5 minute trip to the coffee shop turned into a 30 minute ordeal.

Broken Wrist: Day 5
Today is very exciting.
I went to the Orthopedist at Saint Francis. He took the hot, bulky ace wrap splint off my arm and replaced it with this very stylish splint.
I’m very excited about this for a number of reasons:
1. I can now move my fingers. Now, I can actually type with two hands.
2. I don’t have the “club hand” like I had before.
3. I don’t have to wrap my arm in a garbage bag everytime I take a shower. The splint comes off. (I must say, there was a definite odor emitting from my arm when we removed the ace wrap for the first time in five days. It wasn’t pleasant. But it did feal nice to run cold water over my arm and wash it with soap.)
I’ll have the pleasure of wearing this splint for the next month or so.

Broken Wrist: Day 3
Life with a broken wrist continues for me.
Yesterday, I went to see my Primary Care Physician. He referred me to an orthopedist.
I’m still rocking out the splint. Hopefully I’ll get actual cast, or some kind of removable cast soon.
I haven’t washed my lower arm in three days now. I’m sure it is going to smell awesome when this splint finally comes off.
Since my car is a sick, I traded cars with my mother. It would be next to impossible for me to drive a stick right now.
One of the great benefits of driving Mom’s car is the satellite radio. For the past three days, I’ve been listening to news, sports, music and comedy (my favorite).
On the satellite radio this morning, I heard about the Dyson Airblade. It’s like the best hand dryer in the World. Or something.
Today, i am supposed to actually see my doctor, who can then refer me to an orthopedist. Maybe then, I’ll get a cool cast. I’m hoping for something cooler than the splint i currently have.
Other things that are hard to do with one hand:
Drive and talk on the cell phone. (I might have to finally break down and get one of those bluetooth things.)
Forty-one women, all vying for the title Miss Georgia, arrived in Columbus this morning.
The pageant will be held at the RiverCenter in Columbus over the next week.
Along with News 3’s Tammy Terry, I’m working on all kinds of coverage online. Today, we interviewed all of the contestants. You can see that and more by clicking here.

Thursday night at the Park
Monday I was in Opelika at the Opelika-Auburn News.
Tuesday, I was in Columbus at WRBL.
Wednesday, I was in Birmingham at our sister-station, WVTM. We’re working on some pretty cool coverage of the upcoming football season. More details on that in the next few weeks.
Today, I’m back in Opelika at the Opelika-Auburn News.
It seems like I am never in the same place two days in a row. But I love it.
Because I’ve been so busy, I think I’m going to reward myself a little bit. My girlfriend and I are planning an outing to Golden Park in Columbus for tonight’s Catfish game against the Savannah Sand Gnats. Thursday night’s at Golden Park are always a great way to celebrate an upcoming weekend!

Where did you meet?
Whenever my girlfriend and I are out and about, socializing with other couples, the question eventually pops up.
“So, where did you two meet?“
In the old world, my path probably would have never crossed with my girlfriend’s. We have completely different careers, different home towns, different friends, live in different areas of town, have different hobbies. We probably would have never met.
But in today’s hyper-connected world, our meeting was possible.
“We met online,“ is our slightly embarrassed response.
I say “embarrassed”, because not too long ago, it seemed a bit odd, even sketchy to meet a potential girlfriend or boyfriend online. It seemed like the kind of thing reserved for people looking for less of a relationship, and more of a romantic interlude.
But today, online dating is taking hold. You probably know somebody who skips the bar scene, and instead scours the Internet, looking for potential mates.
In reality, meeting online is no more arbitrary than meeting at a bar, or a bookstore, or even a grocery store. When you meet somebody online, you have an opportunity to correspond with them, learning about each other, before meeting in person.
Now, there are even more resources for those looking for love online. A new site (still in beta) has emerged, offering online dating advice, for those of you looking for love online.

Tiger’s a Daddy!
In an effort to create the world’s most perfect person, Tiger Woods and his wife Elin have reproduced. Tiger announced the birth of Sam Alexis Woods on his website.
I’m not big on following the royal family, but this interview was pretty interesting in that it gave an insight into two people’s lives that are nothing like anybody elses.
