Troy quotes on Jamie Hampton’s injury

October 13, 2008

Yeah, so the post I deleted is on another reporter’s blog. Here are what some Troy guys had to say about the incident. Not so much the hit that ended Jamie Hampton’s season, but the aftermath. I haven’t listened to the Sun Belt Teleconference, nor have I read much around the internet today. A story with all sides will hopefully be in tomorrow’s paper or online later.

DANNY FRANKS - Franks was injured a couple of plays later.

Have you seen replay?
It looks pretty bad. When I went down, I thought it was a lot worse than it was.

No hard feelings?
No, it was just unfortunate.

What happened after Jamie got hit?
There was a little bit. They got up saying, laughing, saying ‘Your season’s done now’, stuff like that. That really escalated everything else.
Everyone wanted to get back at them after that. It’s a game, obviously, but when you hurt somebody, that’s not something you want. That made everybody mad.

Do you know who said it?
I don’t know. In the heat of the moment, but I distinctly remember someone saying we’re glad you’re out for the season and that made everybody mad.

Was anything said after you got hurt?
No, well I don’t really remember. They’re a good team, I can’t take anything away from them, but I don’t believe in any of that kind of stuff. It’s a war, but it’s a game. To wish harm on somebody, I don’t think that’s right.

WIDE RECEIVER KENNARD BURTON

Did you see replay of Hampton’s injury?
It looked like he already had buckled his knee before the dude ran into his leg.

Was it unwarranted?
I feel it was a dirty play because he was defenseless and the guy ran into his knee. They were celebrating after he hurt it, saying he was out for the season. None of us appreciated it. They showed that they didn’t have any class and that’s why they are where they are, 1-5, because they’re not coachable.

Has this been happening when you guys have played them?
I felt they played a little dirty last year. I didn’t see any dirty play like the one on Jamie, but they were hitting after the whistle and talking a lot of smack. That’s probably the biggest trash talking team we’ve played since I’ve been here and we’ve played a lot of teams that deserve to be talking trash.

Why do you think it happened?
I can’t really say. I don’t know. I can’t really answer that question. I don’t know why they do it, but it’s something they do a lot. They haven’t backed it up a lot this year. 1-5, 0-2 in the league, so they haven’t been doing a lot of winning.
