Slow summer days

June 23, 2008

Not a whole lot going on. Obviously, this is a bad time of the year for college football fans. If you want to watch some football, the AFL playoffs are starting tonight. Me? I prefer the College World Series before my two-day mini-vacation to Atlanta to celebrate wedding anniversary No. 3 tomorrow and Wednesday.

I’ve been doing some checking around, but Troy hasn’t gotten any commitments since Nate Newland and Eugene Kinlaw reaffirmed their pledges.

I’d be surprised if they got any before the season started. Times like this is when Troy is on some pretty good prospects and recruiting them well, but a good BCS school may have sent them a form letter, so that slight interest keeps the prospects from going ahead and committing to Sun Belt schools. Also, with camps going on, several prospects are visiting them and trying to get a feel for their school or boost their status among recruiters.

This year I’d expect Troy to bring in a minimum of 5-6 offensive linemen, probably split from the JUCO and high school ranks. That number might not even include the two grayshirts, Kyle Wilborn and Jimbo Arnold. You’ve got to figure that they want to sign around three OL who would be deemed “ready to play right away” and Nate Newland fits that mold. I’d also expect running backs coach Chad Scott to pull some very talented players out of South Florida - guys like Chris Anderson and Dan Parker
