Troy a winner in first game

May 07, 2008

Troy beat North Texas 4-3 in its first game of the SBC Tournament in Troy.

UNT was up 3-2 going to the bottom of the seventh, but Troy avoided the second big upset of the day when Rocky Paige reached on an error, Heidi Johnson tripled her in and Tonya McLean drove in the game-winner with a sacrifice fly.

UNT made four errors, Troy two.

SBC Freshman of the Year Ashlyn Williams struck out 10 in 7 innings to get the win. Of the 3 runs UNT scored, just 1 was earned. Of Troy’s 4 runs, 1 was earned.

Troy plays No. 7 seed UL-Monroe Thursday at 3 p.m. in a winner’s bracket game. I should be up there to cover that one. Ken Rogers covered it for us today.
