Baseball look: Batting order
February 18, 2008
Obviously this could change, but here’s a preliminary look at what the batting order will look like on Day One.
- Trevor Tyre, Jr., 2B
- Bryan Miller, Sr., CF
- Michael Precise, Jr., 1B
- Beau Brooks, Jr., C
- Daryl Otwell, So., DH or Lance Miller, Jr. DH
- Brett Henry, Jr., 3B
- Charley Williams, Jr., RF
- Steven Felix, So., LF
- Shortstop (either Adam Bryant, Fr., Brett Pierce, Jr., or Bart Pettus, So.)
Tyre isn’t the speed demon leading off that Adam Godwin or Ian Craze was over the last few years, but he’s very capable.
“He possesses all the leadoff qualities except speed,“ head coach Bobby Pierce said. “He’s got great knowledge of the strike zone, he can handle the bat and he doesn’t strike out much.“
Brooks has started most of the games at catcher over the last two years, but has hit towards the bottom of the order. He’ll get the first crack in hitting cleanup. Of note, in the three innings I’ve seen of scrimmage ball this spring, he did park one over the right field monster off freshman RHP Shane Ikner.
“He had a great fall with the bat,“ Pierce said. “It is his time and his turn. Inexperience hitting in the 4-hole shouldn’t matter because he’s got great awareness of the zone.“
