A couple of things I’ve learned
October 20, 2008
Thankfully, no big QB race this week. Levi Brown is the starter, Jerrel Jernigan will play and so will Dantavious Parker. Tanner Jones could as well, but coaches stuck with Levi Brown last week because he had the hot hand.
Levi Brown, we just found out, is still a walk-on. For a walk-on to get a scholarship in his first four semesters, an initial scholarship from the previous signing class has to be filled with that, and there never was one available. Coaches promised him that if he was in the mix for the starting job, he’d get a scholly, and he will get one next January. He came to Troy in Jan. 2007.
Jernigan was SBC Offensive Player of the Week. Cameron Sheffield and his 9 tackles, 3 TFL and 2 sacks, was not Defensive Player of the Week. Go figure. Two players combined on the award - some guy from ULL and someone from ULM, though I can’t remember their stats offhand and the SBC release is in my car.
They took the redshirt off Dantavious Parker because he’s 210 pounds and Jernigan’s 180. They don’t want to wear Jernigan down with several runs up the middle like Parker can, but they are plenty confident in Parker’s arm. Obviously, he’ll still be used for the rest of the year to provide the running threat that Levi Brown is not.
