A couple of football notes

November 03, 2008

***My main story for tomorrow focuses on Bear Woods’ foot, which he’s hoping will be ready to play Saturday vs. Western Kentucky. His backup, Donnell Golden, is at home for family medical reasons, head coach Larry Blakeney said, and his status for WKU is uncertain. If both of them can’t play, your starting WLB will be either fifth-year senior Trinidy Thomas, a mainstay on special teams, or walk-on true freshman Rod Winston, who played vs Alcorn State and in the JV game.

***Both Jamie Hampton and Tanner Jones are having their knee surgeries Friday.

***It’s possible Jerrel Jernigan could be ready to go this week, but nothing is certain. “It’s probably a stretch for him to play, but we’re not completely ruling it out,“ offensive coordinator Neal Brown said. “He’s ahead of schedule on his rehab. He’s walking, he’s already jogged and he’ll do some sprinting stuff later this week.“

***We talked at length about the third-down difficulties on both sides of the ball, but that story will run Wednesday.

***Troy does have some musical talents on its football team. A band called “Nasty Nate & the Funky Bunch” is made up of Nate Nolin, Bear Woods, Donnell Golden and Sam Sellers. Last I hear they’re looking for an agent, but I think they value their student-athlete eligibility more.
