The end is near

Closing statements began about 5:15 p.m.

Judge Fuller is giving both men a chance to address the court before he hands down their sentences. Former Gov. Don Siegelman spoke first, growing more and more emotional with every moment.

Siegelman apologized to the court and to the people of Alabama. “I want to say I’m sorry to my wife and my children. I never intended to do anything (wrong),” he said. “I was drawn into public service because I believe in the people of this state. All I ever wanted to do was to work to make this state a better place.”

One of Scrushy’s attorneys is talking before the court now. Like everyone before him, he’s mentioned Scrushy’s numerous religious endeavors, his children.
