A statue of the Roman god of fire watches over Birmingham atop Red Mountain at Vulcan Park. Vulcan, the world’s largest cast-iron statue, holds a spear extended high in the sky. At one time however, instead of a spear, Vulcan held a torch. If the torchlight burned green, then all was well on the roads. A red torchlight on the other hand indicated that there had been a fatal traffic accident within the last 24 hours. Visitors to Vulcan Park will enjoy the Museum where they have the opportunity to light the historic green torch. Other Museum attractions include an up-close view of the statue and access to a picnic area that features a spectacular view of the city. Also at Vulcan Park are Children’s Summer Workshops where kids learn about a multitude of subjects, from Roman history to bird identification.
