Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park is a “blast from the past,” that offers history, hiking, horseback excursions, camping and outdoor recreation. In the mid-1800s, the first furnaces were built at Tannehill. As the years passed, Tannehill became an ironworks center and at its peak, produced 22 tons of iron a day. Tannehill Ironworks factory supplied the Confederacy with tools and weapons for war until it was destroyed by Union soldiers in 1865. Today, craft shops occupy old pioneer cabins, and the old cotton gin stands as a reminder of history. Visitors can enjoy more than 1,500 acres of land that have been established for hiking, camping and other forms of recreation. Tannehill State Park also holds many special events throughout the year. From March to November on the third weekend of each month, people come from all over the region for Tannehill Trade Days – a meeting of “shoppers and swappers” interested in tools, clothing, jewelry, knives, furniture, and much more. Also at Tannehill is a Gem and Mineral Show in June, a Labor Day Celebration, a Halloween Festival, and a Christmas Candlelight Tour.
