Tour the 25,000-ton monument, Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark that pays tribute to the Industrial Revolution. Sloss Furnaces was once an operating iron-production facility. Today the furnaces are a museum, serving as a reminder of post-Civil-War Southern culture, community and growth. A visit to the old iron-works plant will reveal two 400-ton blast furnaces and close to 40 more buildings. Also at the Museum is the Sloss Metal Arts studio where selected artists create sculpture by casting iron, welding and cutting metals, and working with wood. Metal Arts also holds workshops, classes, open studios, and apprenticeships for high school students. A look at the Museum’s schedule will reveal a wide variety of special events, such as the Free the Hops festival held in June, where there is live music, great food, and more than 200 beers available for sampling. Drawing over 32,000 people, the Stokin’ the Fire Barbeque Festival in August is another popular event at the Museum.
