Chastain Memorial Park is Atlanta’s largest park-and-recreation area and it has a long and fascinating history. Creek Indian tribes once inhabited the land and it is believed that an Indian village sill lies beneath the earth at Chastain. During the Great Depression, two almshouses on the property provided shelter for a large population of destitute people. The almshouses are still there, but now function as a school and an arts-and-crafts center. Chastain Park was officially established in the early 1940s under the leadership of Troy Chastain. Mr. Chastain strove to create a world-class recreation area and succeeded. Facilities include an Olympic-size swimming pool, an 18-hole golf course, horse stables, picnic areas, lakes, a tennis center, and the Classic Chastain Park Amphitheater. The Amphitheater was designed inside a natural bowl and opened in 1944. World-class musical acts perform weekly during the warm months. Patrons are free to bring food, bottles of wine, blankets, tables and chairs to the concert venue, which has a variety of seating options. You can even host a concert party for your friends, complete with a catered, candlelit dinner as you enjoy your favorite music under the stars.
