Plush velvet and crystal chandeliers adorn the historic Alabama Theatre where patrons can sit back and enjoy over 300 events per year, including staged productions by Opera Birmingham (www.operabirmingham.org), dance performances, touring Broadway shows, and famous-artist concerts. Built in 1927 by Paramount Studios, the Theatre was originally intended as a venue to showcase Paramount films. Today the Theatre continues to show classics such as White Christmas, as well as contemporary favorites. The Theatre is also home to the 1,783rd “Mighty” Wurlitzer Opus pipe organ. The organ, known to locals as “Big Bertha,” was initially constructed to handle all the sound effects needed to accompany silent films and has been in continual use for 80 years. Today patrons have the opportunity to listen to Big Bertha prior to American Theatre Organ Society chapter meetings and special events such as the Summer Movie Series and special Christmas movie events.
