Literary minds will want to visit the Old Courthouse Museum, located in the old county courthouse in Monroeville. The Museum pays tribute to the history of the town as well as to two famous authors that were inspired by the town’s quaint, Southern charm: Truman Capote and Harper Lee. Harper Lee, author of the literary classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, was born in Monroeville and it is suspected that much of the novel is based on her real-life experience living in the town. In fact, when Hollywood decided to turn Lee’s book into a film, members of the production crew as well as actors spent time soaking in the atmosphere and architecture of the town. The Old County Courthouse in Monroeville inspired the set for the climatic trial scene in the Hollywood production. Each May, you too can absorb the flavor of Lee’s childhood home as the Old Courthouse Museum sponsors the production of “To Kill a Mockingbird” in two-act-play format, with an all-local cast, at the courthouse. Visitors can also take a walking tour of Monroeville to get a feel for the setting that inspired Lee’s famous novel.
