In the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains is Horse Pens 40, a historic nature park that hosts festivals year round. For 15,000 years, civilization has used the area for shelter and religious purposes — the area even has ancient Indian burial grounds! Indians also used the incredible, natural rock formations to corral horses. Today’s civilization uses the rocks for a variety of events including the annual Southern SlopeFest and Slap-N-Jam in March which features a Bouldering Competition where expert rock climbers compete for the title of “Master of Stone.” The event is also a music festival featuring a variety of sounds, from bluegrass to rock-and-roll. Don’t miss the Bluegrass Festivals in May and October! The Park is open year-round for bouldering, camping, hiking, and exploring.
