Gaineswood Mansion
805 South Cedar Avenue Demopolis, Alabama 36732 334.289.4846 www.preserveala.org Visit the historic Antebellum home, Gaineswood, and listen for the sound of voices singing, a piano playing, footsteps on a long stairway, and the rustle of silk skirts dragging along the wall. If you hear these sounds and no one is there to make them, don’t be surprised. Gaineswood is reportedly haunted by a woman named Evelyn Carter who died while visiting the Mansion. Does she still grace the historic Mansion with her singing and piano playing? Visit Gaineswood and determine for yourself if this legend is fact or fiction. Besides being a notoriously haunted spot in Alabama, Gaineswood is also known for its extraordinary architecture — a neoclassical Greek revival-style Mansion. The Mansion features domed ceilings and French, Prussian and Italianate elements. The construction on the home began in 1843 and wasn’t completed until 1861. Today, the Mansion is open for tours daily, on the hour.
