The official State Theatre of Georgia is the Springer Opera House in Columbus. Established in 1871, the Theatre has entertained generations of audiences. Famous personalities such as Edwin Booth, Agnes DeMille and Ethel Barrymore have performed on its stage. Today visitors will still find gas-lit street lamps, an Edwardian grand lobby, and an occasional theatre classic like the seasonal favorite, A Christmas Carol. The Springer Opera House is also home to the Springer Theatre Company. The Company produces a Mainstage series that delights audiences year after year. The Springer Opera House also sponsors a Springer Opera Academy. The Academy teaches acting foundations and technique to kids from pre-kindergarten age to 11th grade. Tours of the historic Theatre are available.
