Take a tour of the second-largest historic district in the state, and the largest in Southeast Alabama at the Eufaula Pilgrimage held each April. The Eufaula historic-district tour includes the Shorter Mansion, which was built in 1884 and is recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as an excellent example of Neoclassical architecture. The Shorter Mansion, located in the center of the historic district, also functions as a museum honoring the six Alabama governors that hail from Eufaula. Open year round except for holidays, the Shorter Mansion is almost always available to the public. Most of the other homes on the tour are privately owned and open only during the Pilgrimage. See examples of antebellum and Victorian architecture as you stroll along sidewalks filled with blooming azaleas and dogwood trees. Southern belles dressed in hoop skirts help the Eufaula Heritage Association host the event that is reminiscent of the days of “King Cotton.” There is also an open-air art exhibit, as well as gardens, afternoon teas, candlelight tours and musical entertainment to enhance the historic, Southern experience.
