In 1703, French pioneers celebrated Carnival, also known as Mardi Gras, for the first time in the New World in Twenty-Seven Mile Bluff, the first settlement of Mobile. Today, visitors from all over the world celebrate Mardi Gras in Mobile, home of the first, United States Mardi Gras celebration. More than just parades, moon pies and beaded necklaces, the Mardi Gras tradition is a celebration that was started by the Roman Catholic Church. The Festival serves as a last-minute revelry before the beginning of a penitent, self-denying, season of prayer and reflection — Lent.
