So I’m at home yesterday morning, and my wife (the Busy Girl) calls me.

And as soon as the phone rings, my daughter (the Busy Baby) hits her mouth on the corner of our table. So I’ve got a ringing phone, a screaming 2-year-old and an attitude.

Busy Girl: “You’ll never guess what just happened to me.”
Me: “What?” (Trying to get my daughter to stop crying).
Busy Girl: “What’s wrong with her?”
Busy Baby: “WAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!”
Me: “Nothing.”
BG: “Tell me!!!”
Me: “She hit her lip on the table.”
BG: “Oh, is she OK?”
Me: (Very salty) “No, I think she’s going to need stitches.”
BG: “WHAT!?!?!?!”
Me: “No, she’s fine. What do you want?”
BG: “My phone got flushed down the toilet.”
Me: “WHAT!?!?!?!”

See this is how it goes in the Lazy Boy house. When something bad happens, it doesn’t just happen, it taunts me. It laughs at me. It kicks me in the you know what and then laughs some more.
How did my wife drop her phone in the toilet? That’s a question I’m still trying to figure out an answer to.
Apparently, it fell out of her pocket, landed in the toilet, and because it was one of those “automatic flush” jobbies, it was gone.
Oh, after the plumber was called and everyone in the office was asked not to use the bathroom, she was able to get the back cover of her phone.
Unreal? Unbelievable? Unfathomable?
Not if you know me. It’s par for the course … a Putt-Putt course. With a windmill and everything.

And so, with that story, welcome to the Lazy Blog.
I wanted to give you guys a little insight into my life. I know, you’ll never be the same.

I’m now in Minneapolis, Minn., for the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. David Marsh is going for his 12th national championships, which would tie him for the most of any Division I coach in history.
The guy he’ll be tied with? Richard Quick. If that name sounds familiar, he’s the guy who’s going to replace Marsh after this meet.
Marsh is leaving to be the CEO of a private swimming club in Charlotte, N.C., Quick, 64, is coming back to Auburn after winning five titles at Texas and seven at Stanford.
So between the two, there’s currently 23 NCAA titles. Not bad.
In case you didn’t know, Auburn’s a swimming school. Ha!
Well not really, but it is the best in the nation. Why else do you thing AU is paying Quick $180,000 a year? It’s a high-profile position, one that AU athletics director Jay Jacobs knew needed to be filled by the best coach out there. And that’s Quick.

So the real question: Can Marsh win 12? Yes.
On paper, the Tigers have 16 swimmers and three divers. That’s more than any other team. And in swimming, it’s all about numbers. The more you have, the better your chance of winning. Even if you don’t have a lot of individual champs, just having people place in the top 8 gives you points.
It’s cliche, but every single point counts.

Anyway, I’m off to check out the University of Minnesota’s swimming facilities and then find something to eat ... I’m feeling chicken wings. Mmmmmmm.

If you have any comments or questions you want answered about anything, please let me know. You can e-mail them to . I’ll try to answer all of them in this space as they come in.

Until next time …
