For all the mythical marbles ... The BCS National Championship Game presented by some corporation

I almost forgot to get in my thoughts/pick, so here we go.

One of my coworkers was asking me earlier what I thought about the game, and I told him the same thing I’ve told everyone else: This game is a coin flip.

I really like both teams, and I think this game will come down to who has the ball last.

The main battle in this game, though, and the one that will decide it will be between Florida’s defense and Oklahoma’s offense.

The Gators have, far and away, the best defense the Sooners will have faced all season. Now that’s not to say OU won’t score points, because I can assure you they will. You don’t just stop that offense.

But assuming the Gators can keep them to 35 they will win.

However, I don’t think the UF defense is quite up to that task.

Florida’s offense will score on Oklahoma, but I don’t think it can score quite enough points to distance itself from the OU offense.

My pick? Oklahoma 41, Florida 38

But as I said, this game is a coin flip and will probably come down to who has the ball last.

And if you’re wondering if this pick has anything to do with the Sooners being my preseason national champ pick, I’d say you’re probably on the right track.

Enjoy the game.

A few Auburn sports you may want to pay attention to

Quite the slow news today on the football front, eh?

Well, maybe it’s a sign, a sign that everyone’s focus should maybe take a break from the tackle football team, which doesn’t play a game of relevance for another nine months, and shift some focus toward some other non-revenue, but highly successful Auburn sports.

First, there’s the No. 9 women’s basketball team, which opens SEC play tonight at South Carolina. The Tigers are 15-0. Yes, that means they have yet to lose. And, from what I’ve seen I don’t see them losing anytime soon. Tennessee comes to town Jan. 25, and Pat Summit will be gunning for her 1,000th career victory if the Vols win all their games beforehand. Again, definitely some interesting things afoot with Nell Fortner’s team.

Another team of interest is the No. 15 gymnastics team, which opens up its home schedule tomorrow against No. 6 Alabama. A few members of the liberal media, including yours truly, talked with coach Jeff Thompson today. He had some great things to say and had plenty of humorous quips regarding Alabama’s 95-meet winning streak over the Tigers.

When they beat us up there last year there was a guy who had a sign that said “80 and a thumb.“ I thought that was pretty funny. I guess after Tommy rubbed it in, we deserved it.

Thompson also joked about the sport of gymnastics and the lack of “defense.“

We’re trying to get that rule changed. I mean, it would be a lot more exciting, wouldn’t it? If we got like one shake of the balance beam or something during the middle of the routine or you could lay somebody down across the vault runway anywhere in the first 35 feet. It’d be more like X Games gymnastics.

Also, the always darn good Auburn swimming team opened up its home schedule against Texas today. Coach Richard Quick, who was recently diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain tumor, was in attendance. Sports editor Mike Szvetitz was on the scene and will have a full report in tomorrow’s OA-News.

Gone ‘cruitin: Auburn setting its sights on top prospects

It doesn’t appear Gene Chizik plans on hiring anybody today, but he and his patchwork staff have certainly been busy trying to woo some of the top prospects in the nation down to the Plains.

The trifecta of Auburn recruiting sites, including our good buddies at AuburnSports.com, are reporting that five-star wide receiver Rueben Randle will make an official visit to Auburn this weekend. Randle (Bastrop, La.) is considered the top-ranked overall prospect in the country, per Rivals.

Randle was originally being recruited by new Auburn running backs coach Curtis Luper to his former school, Oklahoma State. Luper’s change of address seems to have altered Randle’s plans a bit, as he will make the trip East instead of visiting 41-year-old Mike Gundy in Stillwater.

And Luper’s not stopping with Randle, as the second-ranked dual-threat quarterback, according to Rivals, is also expected to make an official visit. Tyrik Rollison (Sulphur Springs, Texas) has yet to set a date, but plans to check out what Auburn has to offer in the near future, according to AuburnSports.com.

These two recent developments are among a number of potential recruits that have surfaced recently, most of which were viewed as unrealistic chances just a month ago. In all likelihood, they still are, but that could change come National Signing Day.
