AUBURN TIGERS

SZVETITZ COLUMN: With Georgia on my mind ...

Mike Szvetitz/Opelika-Auburn News

Having a couple days to digest what happened to Auburn on Saturday against Georgia, I’ve come to one conclusion: The Bulldogs could have beaten anyone in the country that day. Anyone.

Kansas. Oregon. Ohio State. LSU. Anyone.

They were just that good. That dominant. That crunk.

And the blackout just fed the fire. Yes, Georgia could have been playing in hot pink shirts and pants and still have won. Big.

The uniform doesn’t help you catch, throw, run or tackle. But it did do something. And you can’t deny a mental edge. Especially for college kids. There’s just something about a swagger that translates into wins.

There’s something about a chip on a football player’s shoulder that makes him feel like he could climb a mountain, and then turn around and run through it.

Georgia had that swagger Saturday. And the Bulldogs still have it.

They got it when they all rushed the field after their first score against Florida. They added a couple dance steps to it by blasting the Tigers between the eyes, between the hedges.

If Tennessee loses, and Georgia gets into the SEC Championship Game, watch out LSU. Watch out.

Dancing in the dark

Speaking of getting crunk and dance steps, did you see Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson?

Wait, of course you did. That’s all I’ve heard about since the tandem “jumped on it” while broadcasting the Auburn-Georgia game on CBS.

I didn’t see it. Well, not live.

I watched it for the first time on YouTube on Monday afternoon. High comedy right there. Very high comedy.

So what did I think?

I think Verne could hold his own if a dance fight broke out in a back alley. But Danielson? He got served.

Bye, week

Auburn has finally hit its bye week. That sound you hear is exhaling.

The Tigers are tired.

The coaches are tired. The players are tired. Heck, the writers are tired.

It’s good to have a break. Really.

But there’s no rest for the media. Nope. We’ve got a job to do, even without a football game.

Especially one Collin Mickle. Our tireless Auburn University beat writer is going to be busy this week writing a lot of stories. Sixteen by-lines on your “bye week” isn’t considered a break.

I’m sure he’ll be happy when he can kiss this week, bye-bye.

Thanks, Collin.

Prep blitz

Even though there won’t be any football at Jordan-Hare Stadium this weekend, there are going to be four huge high school football games taking place.

Friday night marks the second round of the AHSAA postseason, and there are going to be some doozies.

Let’s start with Class 6A, shall we?

Four of the top teams in the state will be within 15 miles of each other Friday night.

Auburn High will host No. 1 Prattville at Duck Samford Stadium at 7 p.m., while No. 10 Opelika will entertain No. 6 Daphne at Bulldog Stadium at the same time.

Trust me, you’re going to see a lot of athletes from those four teams playing on Saturdays in the near future.

Then, drive a little bit up I-85, and you’ve got another two huge ballgames taking place less than five miles apart.

Class 2A’s second-ranked team Lanett (11-0) is taking on No. 7 Wicksburg (10-1), while Valley is hosting Williamson. It’s not too often you get two teams with double-digit wins playing each other in the second round. But there it is.

Man, it’s going to be a great night under the lights. Hope to see you there.

I promise, though, I won’t be dancing.
