Settin’ up camp
August 02, 2008
We arrived in Sturgis mid-afternoon Saturday. The campgrounds are in a remote area 10 miles east of Sturgis, just passed the famous Full Throttle and Buffalo Chip bars. Both have live entertainment and campgrounds. There are reports that folks at these campgrounds are prone to express themselves through nudity. Naturally, I will investigate.
The Buffalo Chip is also the locale for a Kid Rock concert Monday night. No tickets to be had. Also on Monday at Buffalo Chip is a Veteran’s Memorial, will a special appearance by Sen. John McCain. I’ll have to go check that out.
The campground is relatively new. Only been open three years. Think open field of BamaJam without the humidity and the dust. Replace the grasshoppers with flies and that’s pretty much what we got. The Web site for Shade Valley advertised “shade.“ I guess the definition of South Dakota shade is not quite what we expected. Don’t think big live oaks. Think little scrubs of trees that we in South Alabama would call hedges. Crape myrtles are bigger.
We are on Softtail Drive, campsite number 93. We have no real close neighbors yet, but most everything is sold out up here, so maybe tonight or tomorrow.
William and Richard are staying at a hotel in nearby Whitewood, so we are gonna ride over there and get my bike and just take a look see around. It will probably be an early night.
Wanna give a shout out to….
Time out….
The husband said uttered, “Oh, Lord” and there’s not a church in sight. He is looking at the Sturgis Rally News, a very discriminatory publication which hasn’t got a fat girl in it! He flipped the page around so I could see what was on it. A half naked thing who is like HIS DAUGHTER’S AGE on a chopper.
“Nice bike,“ I say.
“Oh. Yeah,“ he says.
“Close your mouth!“ I yell at him loud enough for the far-away neighbors to hear. “And where’s that wedding band?!“
Where was I? Oh, yeah .... Wanna give a shout-out to Tim and Sandi from Dothan who are somewhere in Tennessee right now, headin’ this way. A Sturgis wedding, you say?
For all of you who are on the rode, ride safe. We have already seen one bad bike wreck today. Truck pulled out in front of a bike.
Sturgis: We’re here!
