This weekend: May 3-4

April 30, 2008

There’s a lot going on in the Wiregrass this weekend.
Here’s what I found in the Eagle’s entertainment calendar:

Dothan
Held in downtown Dothan on Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., the Festival of Murals is showcasing a “Celebration of the Arts” as its theme this year. It will have art activities, crafts for sale, food and entertainment on three stages. Here’s our story on the festival.

First Saturday at Wiregrass Art Museum is holding its art program for kids in conjunction with the festival. It starts at 10:30 a.m.

Dothan Wiregrass Art League is hosting a special china painting event on Saturday at Cultural Arts Center auditorium, 909 S. Saint Andrews St., Dothan, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vendors will offer supplies, china painters will demonstrate and an exhibit of china painters will be displayed and judged. Lunch is $5 a plate. The event is free to attend, but a fee is charged for demonstrations. Call Peggy Jackson at 671-9874 or 797-2247.

Clio
The Clio Chitlin’ Jamboree is Saturday starting at 9 a.m with a parade that leads to the park. There will be arts, crafts, food and games. Call Judy Riley at 397-4893.

Cottonwood
The 16th annual Downhome Country Fest will be Friday and Saturday in downtown Cottonwood. The festivities begin Friday at 6 p.m. with local entertainment. Saturday will kick off with a breakfast in the Cottonwood Community Room from 6-8:30 a.m. for $5. Line-up for the parade begins at 8 a.m. Entertainment will include gospel and country music. A two-hour “open mic” session will be from 10 a.m. until noon. The day’s event will also include a mule, horse and donkey show and an antique car show.

Hartford
Hartford Fun Day in the Park is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free. Events include balloons, free throw, inflatables, face painting, archery, a dunking booth, golf, casting, home run derby, tug of war, live music and more. Games and activities are free, but food will be available for a cost. Proceeds from food sales will be used to purchase new playground equipment.

I’d like to head over to the Festival of Murals and check it out, but I mentioned the celebration of the chitlin and Kena was waaayyyy more excited than I was. I gag easily and I’ve heard chitlins can be quite foul. I’m not sure if I want to pay homage to intestines.  confused

What is everybody else doing this weekend?

Christie

P.S. Here’s an interesting tidbit: The man in the mural who’s wearing those awesome suspenders happens to work at the Dothan Eagle. Any guesses?
