Tennis shuts out Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The No. 27 Auburn women’s tennis team earned its fourth-straight shutout, 7-0, over the University of Maryland Terrapins.

The Tigers moved to 4-1 on the season.

In singles action, Fani Chifchieva defeated Michal Amir, 6-1, 6-0, in the number one spot. Alex Haney defeated Karin Lundmark, 6-2, 6-1, at the number two singles spot. In number three singles, Melissa Koning defeated Julia Huschke, 6-1, 6-2. Whitney Chappell took a win over Maggie MacKeever, 6-0, 6-1, in the three spot. Jil Hastenrath defeated Lisa Miller, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Gaby Beelen battled into a third set in the six spot, but came out victorious. She defeated Oksana Krutiyenko, 4-6, 7-6(5), 1-0 (5).

In doubles action, Chifchieva and Koning paired up to win, 8-0. Chappell and Haney won, 8-2. In the number three doubles spot Hastenrath and Beelen won, 8-3.

The Tigers return to action on Feb. 12 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn to face the Georgia State Panthers. The match is open to the public and admission is free. Live stats for all home matches are available at http://www.auburntigers.com.

Gymnasts win four-team meet at N.C. State
RALEIGH, N.C. — The Auburn Gymnastics team (3-3, 0-3 SEC) won its quad-meet with N.C. State, George Washington and Texas Women’s University with a season-high team score of 195.925. The Auburn trio of Lindsey Puckett, Julie Dwyer and A.J. Mills took the top all-round scores.

“We are really proud of how all of our gymnasts performed today,” said Auburn head coach Jeff Thompson. “It was a very close meet going into the last event and our team did not let the surroundings or the other teams affect what we did on our last event to finish the meet. It is a great road win and more importantly a great away score.”

Junior Puckett earned first place in the all-around for the second time this season, scoring 39.325. Dwyer took second scoring 39.300, followed by Mills with an all-around score of 39.200.

Puckett took first on vault scoring 9.900. Dwyer took first on beam also scoring 9.900. Auburn had a gymnast place in the top-three on all four events.

The Tigers started the meet on beam. Auburn led the meet after the first rotation with a beam score of 48.950, followed closely by N.C. State’s 48.825 vault score.

Auburn stayed in the lead after the second rotation, with the Tigers on Floor (48.725), the Wolfpack on bars (48.800), the Colonials on beam (48.075) and the Pioneers on vault (47.950). A.J. Mills led Auburn with a 9.800 on floor. Puckett followed with a 9.775.

The Tigers widened the gap between them and the Wolfpack with a team score of 49.225, on vault, bringing their running score to 146.900, to N.C. State’s 146.250, TWU’s 144.450, and GW’s 144.300.

Auburn solidified the win with solid bar performances from the line-up, scoring 49.025. Puckett and Dwyer each scored 9.825, followed by Mills and Voss, both scoring 9.800.

Tennis shuts out Hoyas on Saturday afternoon
WASHINGTON — The No. 27 Auburn women’s tennis team (3-1, 0-0 SEC) shut-out its third-straight opponent with a 7-0 win over Georgetown.

“I am very pleased with our efforts today,” said Auburn head coach Tim Gray. “The team was very focused, and they took care of business today. We need to give that same effort tomorrow.”

Auburn’s Fani Chifchieva did not give up a singles set for the second match in-a-row. She defeated Courtney Olsen in the number one spot.
