Tiger freshmen get first big test vs. FSU

So far, Auburn’s freshmen are making college baseball look pretty easy.

The freshmen hit .365 with three home runs and 18 RBI in 74 at-bats in AU’s season-opening, four-game sweep of East Tennessee State. The rookie pitchers were also impressive, allowing one run in a combined nine innings, with six strikeouts and nine walks.

Of course, things won’t always be so easy. The freshmen — and their veteran teammates — will get a reminder of that starting today, when AU (4-0) plays an unusual four-game series against No. 11 Florida State (3-0).

The series opens today at 6 p.m. in Plainsman Park and continues at 3 p.m. Friday.

Then the action shifts to Tallahassee, Fla., for games Saturday and Sunday at FSU’s Dick Howser Stadium.

Auburn head coach Tom Slater is looking forward to the challenge of facing the Seminoles. Auburn is 42-67 all-time against Florida State, including several meetings in the postseason.

FSU eliminated the Tigers from the 2005 NCAA Tournament regional in Tallahassee, AU’s last postseason appearance.

“Florida State is the model of consistency in college baseball,” Slater said. “We always have great series against them, whether it is in the postseason or the regular season.”

Tickets to today’s and Friday’s games are still available for $5 each.
