It snowed.
Auburn beat a ranked team, again .. in basketball.
What’s next?
Oh, and no one got hurt.
What a day.
What a win.
What’s going on?
Snow? Auburn? Really?
No. 18 Ole Miss?
Two game SEC winning streak?
Four wins against the last five ranked opponents?
Really?
Really ... Auburn 80, No. 18 Ole Miss 77 ... Really.
DeWayne Reed has finally become the scorer Jeff Lebo expected him to be, dropping 21, including two big 3-pointers in the second half to spark a game-saving run.
Frank Tolbert was Frank Tolbert - diving, falling, flopping and tying a career-high 29 points. All with a sprained ankle.
Lucas Hargrove has become a solid scoring option off the bench, and is always a good fist pump away from whipping the crowd into a frenzy.
Quantez Robertson found his shot early, and then with a minute to play, and continues to play more minutes than an Allman Brothers song.
Quan Prowell has been a consistent scorer all season and provides size, picking up a career-high Saturday with 12 rebounds.
Rasheem Barrett, when he’s on, can knock it down with the best of them.
How many is that? Six?
What the heck, there’s only one more healthy scholarship players to name .
Matt Heramb? He’s the tallest Tiger to play in the last month and a half.
That’s all seven. Yep.
But it wasn’t pretty. Kind of like the snow.
There was some mud, some puddles, some slush. But it was still a win. Still a treat for those who saw it and got to revel in it.
Auburn lost a 12-point first-half lead, but rallied back. Then, AU got a 7-point lead in the second and blew it. But came back - thanks to a massive 3 by Robertson and some clutch free-throw shooting by Tolbert.
Again, it wasn’t pretty, but when has an Auburn basketball win ever been?
Still, you’ve got to tip your hat to Lebo and his team.
There’s just something about this team. These guys. Just when you think they’re out, they do something to make you scratch your head.
Just when you want to leave early, this team does something to keep you tuned it - to keep you interested.
Maybe it’s because they’re always the underdogs. Everyone loves an underdog.
Maybe it’s because they’re scrappy.
Maybe it’s because there’s no way in the name of Dr. James Naismith that a team with just seven guys, none above 6-foot-9, is supposed to win against a better, bigger and deeper team.
But Auburn did. And does.
“You don’t realize what we’re asking these kids to do,” Lebo said of having to ask his two guards (Reed and Robertson) to play all 40 minutes against Ole Miss. “It’s unbelievable.
“We battled. We just battled our butt off.”
There’s just something about this team.
This day.
The snow.
The win.
