Three Auburn golfers were named 2008 Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Wednesday, marking the first time in school history three student athletes were named to the team.

Graduates Jay Moseley and Steven Groover, along with rising senior Glenn Northcutt, earned spots on the list, increasing Auburn’s all-time All-America Scholar honors to 13.
Moseley was a recipient of the award following the 2006-07 season, making him the third Tiger to win the award twice.

“I was real excited when I saw the list come in,” Auburn head coach Mike Griffin said. “We never had three student-athletes earn All-America Scholar honors in the same season. That’s big stuff.

“I’m real proud of these three young men. They worked very hard in class and on the course and earned every bit of this honor.”

Moseley led all Tigers through 2007-08 with a 71.39 stroke average and 18 rounds under par, one shy of the Auburn record of 19 set by Kevin Haefner in 2002. The Bainbridge, Ga., native competed in all 11 of Auburn’s events, counting 30-of-33 (.909) rounds.

Groover competed in eight events throughout the 2007-08 season, finishing with a 74.25 stroke average.  The Birmingham native carded 4 rounds in the 60s and tied for 14th at the Seminole Invitational, his top finish of the season.

Northcutt, a native of Dothan finished 2007-08 second in scoring average (72.13) and sub-par rounds (12). With an active career scoring average of 72.81, Northcutt is currently third all-time at Auburn, just behind Lee Williams (72.38) and Iain Steele (72.80).

“I’ve always been fortunate to have parents that pushed me to excel on the field as well as in the classroom,” Northcutt said. “To get an accolade that involves both school and athletics is a great honor.”
