Shoulder injury to keep Todd out of scrimmage

It’s an increasingly popular question around Auburn football practice.

How is Chris Todd’s shoulder?

Answers, however, are scarce.

Todd, the junior-college quarterback who was competing for the Tigers’ No. 1 job, didn’t throw a pass in Friday’s practice. He won’t participate in today’s scrimmage.

The exact nature of Todd’s injury isn’t clear, though the quarterback suspects it’s related to a separated shoulder he suffered last year at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. The injury was diagnosed as a Grade 3 separation of his AC joint, which ended his season.

Todd and offensive coordinator Tony Franklin say his current ailment isn’t painful, but Todd is somehow unable to throw the ball with much power.

“It’s a mystery to him, it’s a mystery to me,” Franklin said. “He doesn’t have pain, but he can’t throw. He doesn’t have any zip on the ball. He had better zip when he was in middle school than he does now.”

Todd said he threw comfortably last Sunday, in AU’s first spring practice. But the lack of power surfaced in the Tigers’ second practice, on Tuesday.

“The first day, it didn’t tell as much, because I kind of held back,” he said. “That next day, I decided to go ahead and throw some more balls.

“That’s where I could really tell it really wasn’t back yet. Now, we’re just holding it back, trying to watch it.”

Franklin said Todd will meet with AU medical staffers sometime next week.

Todd said he had discussed his junior-college injury with Birmingham-based orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. But he isn’t sure if he’ll meet with Andrews in the coming days.

“That might be the case,” he said. “I’m not 100 percent sure on that. He’s definitely the guy to talk to — he’s real good with that. We’ll see.”

Injury report
Tailback Tristan Davis (foot) missed Friday’s practice. Tuberville said an X-ray of the senior’s injured foot was negative, but Davis isn’t expected to participate in today’s scrimmage.

“He’s fine,” Tuberville said. “He’s real, real sore.”

Wideout Tim Hawthorne might not scrimmage today. The sophomore left Friday’s practice after his arm was squeezed between two teammates’ helmets during a passing drill.

Tailback Ben Tate participated in most of Friday’s session, but according to Tuberville, the junior won’t scrimmage today thanks to a sore hamstring.

“It’s been nagging him all the last month,” the coach said.

PK Kutch’s status unknown
Is kicker Zach Kutch still an Auburn football player?

Even Tuberville says he isn’t sure.

Kutch hasn’t been seen around the first three spring practices. The junior filled in for an injured Wes Byrum as AU’s kickoff specialist for part of last season, but didn’t record a touchback in 16 attempts.

Friday, Tuberville was asked if Kutch was still with the team.

“Is he out here?” Tuberville asked. “I haven’t seen him lately.”
