Scrimmage called off

A rainy March isn’t cooperating with Auburn’s spring practice plans.

For the second time this week, the Tigers have canceled a scheduled workout due to forecasts of cold, with possible snowfall, in the area. Today’s scrimmage, originally slated for 10 a.m. today, will be postponed, possibly until after the March 29 A-Day game.

Earlier this week, AU scratched Tuesday morning’s practice because of heavy rains.

This postponement could be a blessing in disguise for the Tigers, who are dealing with an onslaught of injuries on offense.

Quarterbacks Chris Todd and DeRon Furr were expected to miss today’s scrimmage due to shoulder injuries. Tailbacks Tristan Davis and Ben Tate were also sidelined by a dislocated shoulder and a sore hamstring, respectively.

Head coach Tommy Tuberville hopes moving the scrimmage will allow a few injured Tigers to participate. AU is allowed two more scrimmages before the end of spring practice, according to NCAA rules.

“We need to scrimmage, but we need to get some guys back,” Tuberville said. “That will save us a scrimmage. We’ve still got two left. We’ll have to find a time to work it in.”

Friday’s practice, originally scheduled to be a low-intensity warmup to the scrimmage, was a full-contact two-hour session. The practice included at least 50 plays of 11-on-11 work.

Tuberville said Friday’s practice could be key for players looking to make a mark.

“We needed to get something on film to be able to evaluate over the weekend to see if we need to make any changes, move anybody up the depth chart,” he said.

Recruits watch practice
Auburn’s second junior day of the spring was slated for Saturday. The cancelation of the scrimmage means most of the recruits expected to be on campus will change their plans.

But a few high-school juniors were already at AU Friday.

That group, which included North Jackson linebacker Tana Patrick — one of the state of Alabama’s top recruits — watched Friday’s session.

Injury report

Defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks missed Friday’s session. Tuberville said the junior strained his back during a weightlifting workout.

Marks underwent treatment after practice and wasn’t available for comment.

Offensive lineman Chaz Ramsey wasn’t at practice Friday. The sophomore injured his back last week and hasn’t practiced since the first half of last weekend’s scrimmage.

Wideout Chris Slaughter (hamstring) didn’t practice Friday. He is day-to-day.
