The No. 23 Auburn men’s tennis team (6-3, 2-0 SEC) returns to action this weekend with its first conference road trip, traveling to Ole Miss for a 2 p.m. match today and wrapping up the weekend with a 1 p.m. Sunday match at Mississippi State.
Auburn is off to its best start in conference play since 2002 after opening its SEC schedule last weekend with wins over No. 63 Arkansas (5-2) and No. 18 LSU (4-3). With the wins, Auburn moved up to No. 23 in the ITA rankings, the team’s highest ranking of the season.
Also appearing in the ITA rankings are junior Alexey Tsyrenov and freshman Tim Puetz. With a 6-1 singles record, Tsyrenov leads the pair with a No. 89 singles ranking. Puetz, sporting a perfect 8-0 mark in singles, follows with a No. 114 ranking.
The Tigers open the weekend at fifth-ranked Ole Miss (8-3, 1-1 SEC), the team’s highest-ranked opponent of the season. The Rebels are coming off a 4-3 win over No. 14 Tennessee and a 5-2 loss to third-ranked Georgia in the opening weekend of SEC play.
Women’s tennis hosts Ole Miss and Miss. State
The No. 40 Auburn women’s tennis team (9-3, 1-1 SEC) will host Ole Miss and Mississippi State this weekend at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Tigers will take on the Rebels today at 2 p.m., and will host the Bulldogs on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Rebels lead the series with the Tigers 23-10. Auburn head coach Tim Gray is 1-1 against the Rebels. Auburn leads the series with the Bulldogs 20-14. Gray is also 1-1 when facing Mississippi State.
Auburn will look to No. 26 singles player Fani Chifchieva, who was named SEC Player of the Week March 6, for the second time this season, to extend her 10-match winning streak. The Tigers will also count on doubles duo Alex Haney and Melissa Koning to continue their success.
The matches are open to the public and admission is free.
Equestrian hosts Georgia, SFA on weekend
The Auburn equestrian team returns home to face Georgia today at 1 p.m. and Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Auburn Equestrian Center. The meets are open to the public and admission is free.
The Tigers are 10-2 on the season with their last wins coming against Fresno State and New Mexico State.
The Bulldogs are 9-2 on the season, and defeated the Tigers, 12-6, earlier this season.
“Georgia is one of the toughest teams in the country,” said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. “They are a big SEC rival. Being at home gives us an advantage, but our girls need to stay focused in order to win.”
The Ladyjacks are 5-8 on the season losing to Baylor, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas Christian.
The Tigers have defeated all those teams this season.
