Inconsistent Tigers fall to Mountaineers

Getting on base wasn’t a problem for Auburn’s hitters Wednesday against Appalachian State.

But once the Tigers reached base, not much else happened.

An unusually inconsistent night on offense led to a 4-2 loss Wednesday to Appalachian State. The loss — which followed a 17-0 Auburn win on Tuesday — snapped a seven-game win streak for the Tigers.

“Eleven runners left on base — that was the name of the game,” AU head coach Tom Slater said. “We lose a 4-2 game, and the bottom line was leaving 11 guys on base. You can’t do that against anybody.”

Auburn (11-5) had nine hits and earned three walks. But the Tigers couldn’t string together enough hits to catch ASU (8-7).

Freshman Cory Luckie, Auburn’s Sunday starter, threw two scoreless innings in a midweek tuneup. When Luckie left, as scheduled, after the second, AU led, 1-0.

Reliever Taylor Thompson (1-2) gave up a single to ASU’s Adam Beasley, then a two-out walk to Jason Altenhof. The next batter, Jason Rook, blasted a home run over the wall in left field, giving the Mountaineers a 3-1 lead.

ASU added another run in the fourth.

Auburn had a chance at a big inning in the sixth. After Luke Greinke led off with a single, Ben Jones followed with a double, chasing ASU starter Aubrey Edens (2-0). Greinke scored on a fielding error on the play.

But with Jones in scoring position, the bottom of AU’s lineup couldn’t take advantage. Appalachian State reliever Adam Mills struck out David Cunningham and Matt Hall, then got Trent Mummey to ground out to end the inning.

Mills threw three scoreless innings. Closer Garrett Sherrill struck out three Tigers in the ninth to earn his second save.

“Credit App State: They came out tonight and really pitched well,” Slater said. “But we need to do a better job.

“We had opportunities, and for the first time in a while we didn’t capitalize.”

Auburn opens Southeastern Conference play Friday at Florida.
