DeWanna Bonner and Alli Smalley are having a good week.
Sunday, the duo scored a combined 32 points to lead the Auburn women’s basketball team past Arkansas in its regular-season finale. The win kept AU in contention for an NCAA Tournament berth.
Tuesday, Bonner and Smalley enjoyed some personal success. Both earned All-Southeastern Conference honors from the league’s coaches.
Bonner, a junior, was a first-team All-SEC selection for the second consecutive year. Smalley, a freshman, was named to the league’s All-Freshman team.
Bonner was one of eight players named to the first team. The 6-foot-4 forward is the SEC’s second-leading scorer, with 18.1 points per game.
She also leads the conference in rebounding, with 9.9 rebounds per game.
Bonner ranks in the top 10 in the SEC in seven statistical categories.
She is on pace to become the second player to lead the Tigers in scoring and rebounding in three consecutive years. She is the first AU player to earn back-to-back All-SEC honors since Mae Ola Bolton in 1986 and 1987.
“DeWanna continues to improve her game, and she is a difference maker,” AU head coach Nell Fortner said in a statement released by the school. “I am happy to see her receive the honor two years in a row as she is very deserving.”
Smalley, who replaced the ineligible Whitney Boddie as AU’s starting point guard in January, ranks second among SEC freshmen in scoring, at 10.8 points per game. She leads AU with 83 assists this season.
Smalley was one of eight players selected to the All-Freshman team. She is the fourth AU player to earn All-Freshman honors in the four-year Fortner era.
“Alli has been a great addition to our team,” Fortner said. “I am proud that she has been recognized for her efforts. I look forward to watching her develop over the next three years.”
Auburn faces Arkansas in the first round of the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn., on Thursday.
