Hunter Morris joined an elite group of players Tuesday when the freshman first baseman was named to USA Baseball’s National Team.

The reigning Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year is one of seven freshmen named to the squad and becomes the fifth player in Auburn baseball history to be selected to the team, which this year has a 22-man roster.

Morris, from Huntsville, hit .229 in 35 plate appearance as the National Team went 9-3 during team trials against teams from the New England Collegiate Baseball League. His five RBI tied him for third on the team and he also put together a .983 fielding percentage.

“It is a really great honor to be named to the 22-man roster that is going to represent the United States,” Morris said. “This is my second go-round with Team USA and I really enjoyed it the first time. I am happy to have that opportunity again and to represent Auburn this time as well.”

The National Team will begin a six-game series against Chinese Taipei beginning today before playing in the Haarlem Baseball Week in Haarlem, the Netherlands from July 5-13. The team will close out the summer by playing in the IV FISU World Collegiate Baseball Championship from July 17-27 in Bmo, Ostrava & Olomouc, Czech Republic.

Morris played with the 18U silver medal-winning team in the World Games in Cuba in 2006.

Morris joins Gregg Olson (1987), Mark Bellhorn (1993, 1994), John Powell (1993) and Steven Register (2003) as former Auburn players who made the prestigious 22-man roster.
