OMAHA, Neb. — From 2002-05, Mark Gangloff and Eric Shanteau swam together as teammates on the Auburn University swimming and diving team.

But, the duo will go head-to-head tonight, this time competing for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Gangloff and Shanteau finished second and third, respectively, Sunday night in the 100m breaststroke semifinals at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials at the Qwest Center.

Gangloff, an Olympian for the United States in 2004, finished second in the semifinal to world-record holder Brendan Hansen. Gangloff clocked a 1:00.17 to finish second in the race, just coming short of the personal-best 1:00.10 that he swam in the preliminary.

Shanteau was less than a half second behind him, finishing third in the semifinal with a personal-best time of 1:00.63.

The trio of Hansen, Gangloff and Shanteau — along with Scott Spann, Chris Ash, Scott Usher, Kevin Swander and John Christe — advance to the 100m breast finals, slated for Monday night.

Two other former Auburn swimmers were also in action in Sunday’s finals session. Huntsville native and 2004 Olympian Margaret Hoelzer was first as she swam in the 100m butterfly semifinals. However, she missed out on a finals appearance after finishing 11th with a time of 59.48. Hoelzer advanced to the semifinals after placing fifth in the preliminary with a 58.67.

Competing in the 400m individual medley finals was former Auburn swimmer Julie Stupp. She finished eighth with a time of 4:46.01, swimming just three lanes over from Katie Hoff as she won the race with a world-record time of 4:31.12.

Action in the 2008 Olympic Swimming Team Trials continues at 11 a.m. today with preliminaries in the women’s 100m backstroke, men’s 200m freestyle, women’s 100m breaststroke, men’s 100m backstroke and women’s 400m freestyle.
