Auburn fans had plenty to cheer about Sunday.
In addition to an 88-76 win over Alabama, Auburn was presented with the James E. Foy-ODK Sportsmanship Award for the sixth consecutive year.
The Iron Bowl Trophy, presented to the game’s winner at the following home basketball game, came to Auburn once again after the Tigers’ 17-10 win over the Crimson Tide in November at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
“We want to thank all the Auburn family, the 2007 football team, the seniors,” AU head coach Tommy Tuberville said when accepting the trophy. “They won 50 games in five years and were the third (straight) group of seniors that never lost to Alabama.”
As part of the trophy presentation tradition, Alabama SGA President R.B. Walker sang Auburn’s fight song following the trophy presentation. He also had a warning for Auburn faithful.
“I hope y’all enjoy this because this is the last time we’re going to sing the Auburn fight song,” he said.
Foy, a retired dean of students at Auburn and an Alabama alumnus, also led a “War Eagle” cheer.
Tuberville concluded his acceptance speech with a shot at recruiting pundits.
“Regardless of what you read and hear, we will have a football team next year,” the coach said. “And we’ve won six and we’re working on seven.”
