ATLANTA — Auburn was well-represented Sunday in the semifinal and championship rounds of the Georgia Tech Fall Tennis Invitational, with a player or team competing in each of the four brackets.

The highlight of the day came from the doubles team of Milan Krnjetin and Michel Monteiro, as they won the “B” doubles championship. The pair defeated UNC-Wilmington’s Anton Nikolov and Alex Wetherell, 8-1, in the semifinal before accepting a default victory in the championship match over Vanderbilt’s Alex Divalerio and James Moye.

Krnjetin was also active in the “B” singles bracket, finishing second overall. He defeated Furman’s Phillip Fuelkell, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the final match where he lost to Armstrong Atlantic’s Rafael Array, 6-3, 7-5.

The Tigers return to action Tuesday where Tim Puetz and Alexey Tsyrenov will compete in the D’Novo All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Soccer thrashes Mississippi State
Katy Frierson was everywhere. The freshman logged a pair of goals and assists Sunday afternoon as the Tigers unloaded on Mississippi State for a 6-0 win at the Auburn Soccer Complex.

Kara Kasten scored three goals for the Tigers in the Southeastern Conference victory. The win moves Auburn to 6-5-2, 2-1-1 SEC, while MSU slipped to 5-8-0, 0-4-0 SEC.

Auburn’s offensive show comes after the Tigers were defeated by Ole Miss, 3-1, on Friday night. Head soccer coach Karen Hoppa was pleased with the resiliency that her team showed on Sunday.

“We had a fantastic turn around after a frustrating Friday night,” Hoppa said. “It was nice to see the girls come out and score early and then score often. It really put the game away and allowed some of our players to rest.”

Chifchieva finishes second at ITA
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Ninth-ranked Fani Chifchieva finished as the Rivera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships runner-up, suffering a 6-3, 6-4 setback at the hands of No. 20 Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State on Sunday at the Riviera Tennis Club.

“It was an excellent tournament for Fani and a great learning experience,” head women’s tennis coach Tim Gray said. “She will take a lot of positives away from this event.”

The Auburn women’s tennis team will be back in action Oct. 24-27 at the ITA Regional in Athens, Ga.

Women’s golf finishes fifth at Lady Tar Heel
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The No. 14 Auburn’s women’s golf team finished with a final round 9-over-297 on the UNC Finley Golf Course to bring in a fifth-place finish Sunday at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational.

Cydney Clanton (78-70-70—218) led the Tigers with a fourth-place finish individually.

Three of the top four teams from the second round didn’t falter Sunday, as No. 23 Wake Forest claimed the team championship with a 291—876.

Clanton, a sophomore All-American, rebounded from a rough 6-over-78 first round to post back-to-back 2-under-70s to finish in a three-way tie for fourth, only two shots back from the titlists. Clanton picked up two birdies on the back nine and added another on the front side.

Candance Schepperle knocked in five birdies en route to a 3-under-69, the lowest final round score of any player on Sunday. Entering the day tied for 30th after posting an 8-over-80 on Saturday, Schepperle bounced back to finish ninth (72-80-69—221).

Volleyball swept at Kentucky
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Playing one of the best teams in the Southeastern Conference, the Auburn volleyball team (5-12, 0-6 SEC) forced Kentucky (15-2, 6-0 SEC) to extra points in two sets, but could not close out the win in the 3-0 (24-26, 18-25, 26-28) loss at UK’s Memorial Coliseum.

“We played well, we had moments when we were very solid, we mixed it up pretty well and they never got a great read on us,” said head coach Wade Benson. “We were in the lead in two of those sets and had great opportunities to push it, but Kentucky made some great plays to get back in it and get the win.”
