AU ROUNDUP: Men’s golf finishes 2nd at FSU tournament

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The No. 12 Auburn men’s golf team (289-862) finished second behind host No. 11 Florida State (285-858) in the Seminole Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,041-yard Golden Eagle Country Club on Monday.

Senior Jay Moseley (70-209) finished second, three shots off the individual lead. Senior Steven Groover (73-218) and junior Glenn Northcutt (71-218) tied for 14th followed by senior Jaime Bowen (75-219), tied for 19th, and sophomore Cole Moreland (75-220), tied for 27th. Senior Patton Kizzire (80-229), competing individually, tied for 51st.

“We came close today,” said head coach Mike Griffin. “We took the lead but gave it right back to Florida State.

“It was a good tournament and a good field. We just left too many shots on the course.”

Trailing Auburn were No. 20 North Carolina (290-866), Virginia (294-866), Louisville (288-873), Vanderbilt (281-873), No. 25 UAB (286-873), Ole Miss (304-882), LSU (297-889), Charleston (290-894), Maryland (307-899) and No. 23 Mississippi State (304-900).

Vanderbilt’s Jon Curran (70-68-68—206) claimed the individual championship followed by Moseley in second and UAB’s Zach Sucher (68-210) and North Carolina’s Kevin O’Connell (72-210) tied for third.

The Tigers return to action March 14-16 at the Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.

Gymnastics moves up
According the March 3, GymInfo Women’s National Rankings, the Auburn gymnastics team moved to No. 11, passing conference opponent No. 12 Arkansas.

The Tigers made the top 20 of all four events, and three of Auburn’s gymnasts are ranked in the top 25 of the all-around.

Lindsey Puckett, Julie Dwyer and A.J. Mills are all ranked in the top 25.

Additionally, both Puckett and Dwyer are ranked in the top 25 of two events.

Auburn is ranked as the No. 4 beam team after a season-high 49.425 at Denver.

After setting a school record 49.500 on vault at Denver, the Tigers moved to No. 10. Auburn is ranked No. 12 on floor exercise and No. 19 on uneven bars.

Junior Puckett remains steady in the top 10 at No. 9, with an all-around average score of 39.169. She is also ranked No. 4 on beam and No. 19 on floor exercise.

Dwyer is ranked at No. 16 in the all-around. She is ranked as the No. 2 gymnast in the nation on balance beam. After setting an Auburn record on vault at Denver with a 9.975, Dwyer is tied at No. 22 on vault.

Mills, who won the all-around title against Illinois last Friday, is ranked at No. 22 in the all-around with a high score of 39.475, which she reached at Denver on Sunday.

The Tigers will travel to Norman, Okla., this week to face No. 10 Oklahoma on Friday. Auburn will return to the Plains on March 14, for its final home meet of the season. The Tigers will host No. 14 Michigan State for “Senior Night.” Auburn will be honoring its four seniors, Julie Dwyer, Kayla Gies, Aimee Goheen and Karmen Pinckney.
