AU gymnasts win at Denver

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 12 Auburn gymnastics team (5-6, 0-6 SEC) scored a season-high point total in its 196.600- 196.575 win over No. 13 Denver (10-4).

Additionally, Julie Dwyer set an Auburn high on vault on the team’s way to scoring a program high on vault.

“I am so proud of the way the team fought all day,” said Auburn head coach Jeff Thompson. “Two meets in a row now we have hit all of our bar routines. That got us off to a great start and the momentum definitely carried over to vault and floor. To comeback from a four-tenths of a point deficit going into the last event to overcome Denver for the win will give an already outstanding beam team the confidence and the credit they deserve.”

Akins wins SEC 60-meter hurdles to lead track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Senior Ty Akins won the 60m hurdles to highlight the third and final day of competition for Auburn at the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Tiger men finished in eighth place at the meet with 37 points, while the women also placed eighth with 27 points.

The Tigers wrapped up the meet with two individual champions, as Akins’ victory followed Jacob Dunkleberger’s win in the weight throw Saturday. It was the first SEC meet for several freshmen that made the trip for Auburn this weekend.

“My main focus this weekend was to try to get our main people to perform well and get them ready for nationals,” said head coach Ralph Spry.

Softball wins two of three on weekend
COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Auburn softball team (15-3) capped a 2-1 weekend with a 6-0 win over Syracuse on Sunday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.

Jorja Bell hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs to lead the Tigers in the game.

On Saturday, the Tigers split two games. The Tigers defeated Charlotte, 4-0, in the morning and then fell to UMass, 6-3, in the afternoon.

Men’s golf in third at Seminole Intercollegiate
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The No. 12 Auburn men’s golf team carded a 2-under 286 and came in tied for third after the first round of the Seminole Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,041-yard Golden Eagle Country Club on Sunday.

Seniors Jamie Bowen and Jay Moseley are tied for 11th after carding 1-under 71s. Sophomore Cole Moreland and junior Glenn Northcutt shot even par 70s to finish tied for 19th. Senior Steven Groover (73) is tied for 27th.

Competing individually, Patton Kizzire is currently tied for third after firing a 2-under 70.

Men’s tennis takes two home SEC wins
The 35th-ranked Auburn men’s tennis team defeated Arkansas, 5-2, on Friday and then polished off LSU, 4-3, on Sunday to improve to 2-0 in SEC play.

Both matches were held at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.

“It was just a great SEC match,” head coach Eric Shore said of the LSU meeting.

Women’s tennis falls at No. 34 LSU on Sunday
BATON ROUGE, La. — Auburn’s Fani Chifchieva won her 10th consecutive match, but it was not enough as the 29th-ranked Auburn women’s tennis team lost, 4-3, to the 34th-ranked LSU Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

Auburn fell to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the Southeastern Conference, while LSU improved to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in SEC play.

“Today was a heartbreaker,” Auburn head coach Tim Gray said.  “We are going in the right direction. This just was not one of our better matches. But overall I am proud of how hard our team fought today.”

Equestrian wins two on West Coast tour
FRESNO, Calif. — The Auburn equestrian team (10-2) swept the weekend series against Fresno State (3-4) and New Mexico State (4-4) on Sunday.

Auburn defeated Fresno State by virtue of a tiebreaker with 1037-947 raw score after tying, 8-8. The Tigers won Hunt Seat, 5-3, but lost Western, 5-3. The Tigers also defeated New Mexico State 11-4. The Tigers won Hunt Seat 5-3 and Western 6-1.

“New Mexico State was a good win for us,” said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. “We really turned it on in the second half.”
