AU center Moore will transfer to AUM

Cassie Moore’s freshman season was the Auburn women’s basketball team’s most successful season in four years.

But as the Tigers hope to build on their accomplishments next season, they’ll be doing it without Moore, last season’s tallest player.

Auburn head coach Nell Fortner confirmed that the 6-foot-4 Moore, a Montgomery native who played at Jeff Davis, is expected to transfer to AUM.

“I thought she had a great year,” Fortner said. “I’m sorry to lose her, but we’ve released her from her scholarship.”

Moore averaged 3.2 points and 2.6 rebounds in 11.3 minutes per game last season.

She had her moments, scoring a season-high 17 points in an early-February win against Mississippi State and finishing with 9 points and 10 rebounds in the regular-season finale at Arkansas.

But the MSU game was her only double-digit scoring effort, and she scored just 4 in Auburn’s first-round NCAA Tournament loss to George Washington.

Moore’s departure leaves the Tigers with uncertainty in the post. Center KeKe Carrier didn’t play last season due to academic difficulties; her status for 2008 is unclear.

Without Moore and Carrier, AU’s only experienced returning post players are Jordan Greenleaf and Auburn High grad Trevesha Jackson. At 6-foot-1 and 6-foot, respectively, neither is a traditional center.

Incoming freshman Chantel Hilliard, 6-foot-2, is the Tigers’ tallest signee.

Efforts to contact Moore were unsuccessful.
