AU baseball looks to stop slide against Troy

TROY — Two clubs hungry for a win collide when Auburn and Troy renew their baseball rivalry at 6 p.m. today at Riddle-Pace Field.

Both teams are coming off long weekends on the road. Troy (12-6) was swept by undefeated and top-ranked Arizona State. Auburn (11-8) was swept by Florida on the opening weekend of Southeastern Conference play.

“We’re just trying to win and play the game the right way,” Auburn coach Tom Slater said Monday. “We didn’t play well last weekend.”

Asked what particularly bothered him about the weekend in Gainesville, Slater didn’t get specific, but offered, “Lots of things.”

“We had a meeting today to go over a long list,” Slater said, sounding as if that conference was lengthy — and noisy.

The noise still ringing in the ears of the Trojans are Sun Devil doubles rattling off the wall. Trojan coach Bobby Pierce said the only thing wrong with the trip to Arizona was keeping score.

“There was a lot to take from that trip,” Pierce said. “We took the team to see some spring training. It was good to see some former Trojans there.

“A number of them came to our games at night.”

Pierce said Nate Moore, Henry Gutierrez, Tom Gregorio, Casey Smith and Adam Godwin were among the group.

“That was fun,” he said. “That and the experience of seeing and competing against the No. 1 team in the nation.”

Pierce called the Sun Devils the best college team he’s seen “in person, playing against, in the six years I’ve been here at Troy.”

Pierce noted that both Auburn and Troy were looking to get back to winning.

“We’ve had some great games the last three or four years, and I expect another good one tonight,” he said. “Both teams need to get back on track a little bit, though.”

Slater has played Troy home-and-home since taking the Auburn job four years ago.

“I’ve known Bobby a while and I told him we’d play home-and-home,” Slater said. “I was at VMI, so I know how important it is to get some good non-conference home games. It’s a short drive and it’s a good series.”

Auburn will start pitcher Luke Greinke (2-1, 4.09 ERA). Andrew Dickinson (1-0, 1.93 ERA) will start for the Trojans.

Two freshmen are swinging hot bats for the Tigers. Hunter Morris has a six-game hitting streak and Justin Hargett has hit .455 while building an eight-game hitting streak.

Catcher Beau Brooks leads the Trojans with a .450 average. It was Brooks’ homer that ended last year’s Trojans-Tigers game in Troy in the bottom of the 16th inning.

Troy plays against at home Wednesday against North Florida, then hits the road for a conference series at Western Kentucky. Auburn is at home this weekend against Kentucky.
