Unity sky high in Mile High City

Wednesday was a powerful day here in Denver. The confusion soon became order as the Obama and Clinton camps cut a deal on the roll call vote. Unity was in the air as President Bill Clinton gave an incredible speech and endoresment of Barack Obama.

The vote issue was not done until late in the morning on Wednesday. We were literally hunting our delegates down for a signed vote so we could tally them and announce them on national TV. I received the tally from my Executive Director 45 seconds before DNC Secretary Alice Germond called ALABAMA… It was one the most nerve racking experiences in my political life. It worked after a quick prayer…thank YOU LORD!  Alabama cast 50 votes for Obama and 7 for Clinton. I voted Obama.

Joe Biden was nominated last night and was warmly received. His son, Beau Biden, stole the show with the introduction of his dad. Hillary, Bill and Joe Biden all surrounded Barack Obama with endorsing reassurance that he is ready to be President. The hall was absolutely loud and explosive. The much publicized split in the party never materialized and we came back together. I predict this unity of the convention will translate into the broader electorate over the next few weeks. If the convention is any indication, I sense a unity and purpose building now that Bill and Hillary are fully supportive and ready to campaign for Barack Obama.

There were still tears in the eyes of many delegates as Hillary came down on the floor and took the New York microphone. I moved around the floor all night and saw the many famous anchors and political figures of the past. It was a great experience. The old tune We Are Family rang out as people celebrated. It was deafening when Obama made a surprise appearance to welcome Joe Biden to the team. Biden has a beautiful family and an incredible life story.

All our candidates have been respectful and given homage to John McCain as a great American. That was good and the convention appreciated it as well. This campaign will be about our differing visions of America and the hope to change the Bush years. It will be a tough and hard fought race that will be close.

This morning we had our delegation breakfast and heard from Congressman John Lewis of Georgia. Cong Lewis is from Pike County Alabama and is the last of the 6 speakers at the I Have a Dream Speech from 1963. Lewis is a civil rights giant and lit the house with his message. We heard from the Quilters of Gees Bend. The five ladies sang and shared with us. They brought the famous VOTE quilt. We watched the I Have a Dream speech before departing.

I had the pleasure of doing an interview with SKY TV for Europe this morning at Invesco Field. Security was tight and the place looked great. As I was waiting I watched Stevie Wonder rehearse his performance of tonight…Signed Sealed Delivered is on the agenda…be watching! I left the music on my daugters cell phone voice mail in Nashville. It is one of our favorites and she is away at school. It was a live Stevie Wonder recording!

It is crazy back at the hotel as we try to accomodate all our guests with passes and special assistance. Chairing a delegation is akin to being a Cruise Ship Director, except you don’t get paid. I am ready for the big event tonight but am tired and ready for some normal routine. Many of our delegates are tired and worried about you all at home with Hurricane Gustav in the gulf.

If I can, I will get a couple more entries to you after the evening events. I continue to sense history in the making. This morning I signed the official nominating form for the President and Vice President of the United States. I am honored and humbled by the opportunity!

Joe
