Friday observations

Auburn’s seventh practice of the preseason was about as uneventful as they get. Not much in the way of news and notes from Friday morning’s three-hour session. The big topic of discussion in post-practice interview was Saturday morning’s scrimmage, the first of the preseason.

As far as what actually happened on the practice field, both quarterbacks had a good day. According to the running practice totally—and thanks again to my colleague Jeffrey Lee of Auburnsports.com, who has shared the load of tracking these numbers with me—Kodi Burns is 135-for-195 (that’s 69.2 percent) and Chris Todd is 172-for-230 (74.8 percent). They both looked good Friday. Todd completed his first 11 passes and would have finished 12-for-12 if it wasn’t for freshman safety Christian Thompson, who did a good job breaking up a would-be touchdown to Terrell Zachery. Todd also had a nice touchdown strike to Montez Billings, in which he threaded the needle between two defenders and Montez made a nice catch.

Burns was impressive too. For the first time this preseason, he really showed off his running ability. Obviously, that’s the X-factor in this quarterback race: Todd is pretty clearly the more accurate passer, but Burns can make plays with his feet in a way that no other Auburn quarterback can. Burns isn’t as fast as you might think, but he’s very shifty, and he accelerates well. Tommy Tuberville says over and over again that both will play, and it makes sense: They both do one thing very well, but both of them have an ability the other isn’t able to match.

The only other event of note was a practice-field fight between redshirt freshman FB John Douglas and true freshman S Marcus Jemison. The two scrapped for probably 15-20 seconds before several trainers and support staffers pulled them off of each other, and it looked like quite a brouhaha. After the fight, Jemison was helped off the field, supported by two trainers. Medical staffers put a boot on his left foot and he walked—on crutches—to a waiting van, which drove him off the practice field. It’s not clear how he suffered the injury—Tuberville said it was an ankle—or if it was related to the fight.

Tuberville said it’s too early to tell how serious the injury is. I asked him if he was bothered at all by the fact it appeared to have happened in a practice-field fight, but he didn’t seem to think it was a big deal.

“It’s a fight every down out here,” he said.

So take that for whatever it’s worth.

If Jemison can’t practice, that leaves Auburn with 11 scholarship defensive backs, including four safeties: Zac Etheridge, Mike McNeil, Christian Thompson and Mike Slade. Freshman Drew Cole has also worked a bit at safety, but he’s mostly a cornerback for now. That could change if Jemison is sidelined for more than a couple days.
