If you’re a West Virginia fan, you had better enjoy 2008.
Despite the loss of Rich Rodriguez, Steve Slaton and others, the Mountaineers are still loaded and might have their best chance yet for a national title run.
But this is probably their last chance.
Quite frankly, while the Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma was impressive, the Mountaineers shouldn’t have hired Bill Stewart as head coach. I’m sure he’ll do a nice job and he seems like a good coach, but there’s a reason guys go that long without getting a head job. He’s not going to be a program builder.
But, as I said, this year looks good.
Daphne native Pat White is back for his fourth year as a starter and still has Noel Devine to give the ball to and an outstanding offensive line in front of him.
The wide receiving corps lost its most productive players, but should be fine.
I was somewhat shocked to see that West Virginia ranked seventh in the nation in total defense last year, but only four starters are back from that unit, including just one defensive back in their 3-3-5 setup.
The Mountaineers have three tough non-conference tests and the season finale vs. South Florida looms large, but this team should be able to handle it. Whether they will or not is anyone’s guess.
Here’s the schedule:
Aug. 30: Villanova
If this were basketball they might be in trouble.
Sept. 6: at East Carolina
The Pirates arrrrrrrrrrrr dangerous.
Sept. 18: at Colorado
Now this is an interesting one. Being mountain men themselves, the high altitude shouldn’t be as much of a problem as it is for other teams, but it’s tough to win in Boulder. And that crowd will be fired up for a Thursday night game.
Sept. 27: Marshall
The West Virginia legislature is probably regretting forcing these two to play.
Oct. 4: Rutgers
No problem at home.
Oct. 11: Syracuse
Turn off the scoreboard.
Oct. 23: Auburn
Auburn is probably the better team but this is just one of those games that doesn’t have a good feel to it. And Tommy Tuberville is 0-3 on the road against non-SEC BCS conference schools while on the Plains.
Nov. 1: at Connecticut
Definitely some letdown potential here.
Nov. 8: Cincinnati
This could be interesting if it were a road game.
Nov. 22: at Louisville
Don’t expect a game as entertaining as the last three.
Nov. 28: at Pittsburgh
A short week with the biggest game for your program in 15 years on the horizon against your biggest rival that ruined your national title hopes last year. This one has a lot of variables.
Dec. 6: South Florida
There’s a very good chance both could be undefeated coming in. I don’t like the Bulls in December in the mountains.
There’s really no reason WVU can’t go undefeated this year. Of course, that’s also been the case the last two years and they haven’t done it. I think they will, but wouldn’t be surprised to see them lose a game or two.
