Happy Fourth!
I hope the weather where you are is sunny and warm and that you are able to celebrate our nation’s independence with friends and loved ones. Perhaps you’ll gather in someone’s backyard—maybe your own. Maybe you’ll go for a swim. Most likely, you’ll take in some fireworks later tonight.
And as you do so, consciously consider what this day means: Freedom from tyranny and persecution. Freedom to pursue opportunity and define your own destiny. It’s what makes America the greatest country in the world.
And it’s why so many people come here. As you celebrate your country, celebrate your citizenship in it and consider what it takes for someone who wasn’t born with the American birthright to earn it.
Here are a couple of practice tests that are similar to those administered to immigrants aspiring to call themselves Americans.
And if you don’t have enough to celebrate this weekend, read this story about your newest fellow citizens. They all passed the test. Could you?
Happy Independence Day!
