Kid Power - Making a Difference

“If we bake, will they come?” That was the question faced by Auburn Muslim Youth Team as we planned our 3rd International Bake Sale outside Auburn Kroger on Sunday, April 6. As OA News reporter Don Prater had said in his article regarding our first sale, “It was good food for a good cause.” Once again, our community’s generous support made this year’s event another success story. The aroma from mouthwatering delights lured shoppers to our table. Samosas, savory pastries stuffed with spiced potatoes; Pakoras, chickpea flour fritters spiced with onions and cilantro; and Baklava, the famous Mediterranean dessert, were on the menu.
The excited youth will be donating their entire sales to the March of Dimes. As you may already know, nearly 75 years back, this organization developed the cure for polio, saving the lives of many kids who would have been otherwise crippled and handicapped. Today, the March of Dimes is spearheading another effort—the fight against prematurity and birth defects. If you missed the bake sale but would like to help continue this life-saving research, you can donate online by going to my brother or my March of Dimes accounts at http://www.walkamerica.org/ahmedal or http://www.walkamerica.com/AICYOUTH. Or come walk with us at the March for Babies on Saturday, April 19, 2008, at 9 AM, Opelika Municipal Park. Together we can make a difference in someone’s life.

Ambassador Alex with Alabama MDA

Hi, my name is Alex McCarty.  I am in the 3rd grade at Yarbrough Elementary School.  On December 26th I will be 10 years old.  Some of you may have seen me before I drive a bright orange wheelchair with an Auburn tiger tail on the back.  I have a disease called Duchunne Muscular Dystrophy.  It’s just a part of who I am.  My legs may not work anymore, that’s not as bad as it sounds, because I do love to drive my chair.  Although it is sad to watch most of my friends run and play on the slide.  Now I can play baseball in my chair.  I love to hit homeruns!  Everybody on my team is as the same as me, that’s great.  One thing I really don’t like about being in my wheelchair is people stare at me.  Just because I am a little different, does not mean I don’t have feelings.  Please don’t stare at me!  You can stop and say, hello!  Oh, I almost forgot one very important thing.  I am 2008 State of Alabama MDA Goodwill Ambassador.  I get to travel the whole state of Alabama, to bring awareness, and help raise money.  Money that helps send me to summer camp.  Summer camp is the best week of my life.  I think it may be a little better than Christmas.  Well only a little.  The money I raise may lead to a cure.  They say boys with my disease don’t live very long, but that’s okay because when I go to heaven I will run and walk! I am going to build a slide out of clouds.  I am going to be the same kid on the outside, that I am on the inside now.
