ASK AUBIE WILL RETURN IN THE FALL - MEANWHILE, THE CUB REPORTER WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.
“How does a mosquito bite you if it doesn’t have any teeth?”
Brinson Blackburn, age 5
In fact mosquitoes do have “teeth” but not in the sense that we usually
think of human and other vertebrate teeth. The mouthparts of mosquitoes are
formed by a bundle of very long, slender structures (called stylets) that
together form a feeding tube that allows the mosquito to pierce skin and feed on
blood. At the tip of each of a pair of these structures is a row of teeth, much
like the serrated edge of a steak knife. By sliding these structures back and
forth, the mosquito is able to cut a tiny hole in the skin through which the
mouthparts are inserted. The same “teeth” that cut through the skin also cut
through the walls of tiny blood vessels (capillaries) in the skin from which the
mosquito draws blood into its mouth.

Best Mom Essay Contest Winner, The Fuller Brothers
This is Brooks (8) and Brady Fuller (5) and we want to tell you why we think our mom is the best and why we love her so much.
We want to give you 3 reasons why we feel the way we do. First, our mom has sacrificed herself completely for us. She could be out making lots of money with the college degree she got but she has chosen to be an at home mom and be there for us everyday. She cooks, cleans our clothes, cleans the house, takes us to our practices and never misses a game. She is our team mom and room mom. Secondly, our mom is committed to us. She loves Jesus and she reads the bible to us, prays for us and tells us she loves us all of the time. She takes great care of our daddy and he really needs her. He says he would be lost without her.
Finally, our mom is a servant to lots of people. She was recently the leader of a group of moms that raised over $40,000 for two kids in our school who have bad cancer. Their families needed money and mom helped give them over $20,000 each. She started a rubber bracelet campaign for Carly and Bennie and spent lots and lots of hours at night working hard on it.
She also has a friend in Auburn who son was born with a hole in his heart. Her friend and her family had to go to Boston for William to have a heart surgery. Our mom put together a fund raiser for their family and raised over $4,400 for them. Not many people know she does this kind of stuff. She has done a lot for other people and we just wanted to tell you about her. We think it is why she is the most special mom in the whole world.

My Mom by Jarvis Ashmore
Mothers by Jarvis Ashmore, 5th Grade
Mrs. Tamara Garner’s Class, Northside Elementary School, Opelika
Mothers, aren’t they the best thing in the universe? Especially on Mother’s Day. Let me describe to you how my mom looks, sounds and feels. Come on and let’s go pick some flowers.
My mom looks like she’s fresh from the dryer and she always will. Plus, she’s bright as a street light. Every mom is supposed to bring peace in the world like trying to talk us out of dangerous stuff or something like that.
She sounds beautiful like a singer. She has all the fancy records. She never been a drug addict that’s why she sings well for one reason.
She smells like a brand new piece of candy or fruit. She has perfume on everyday so she can smell good for church and graduation day on May 9 for my sister. It’s hard to describe to you how my mom looks sounds and feels. I hope you can see how wonderful she is and she loves me and I love her. Happy Mothers Day!
When it is storming, what causes thunder?
Amber and Tiffany Sellers, 11
Thunder is caused by lightning. Lightning passes through the air heating it to a temperature of 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit, five times the temperature of the surface of the sun. The air expands because of the heat with an explosive force that makes the loud sound we know as Thunder.
Great Question, Girls!

NIE Teacher Valerie Bennett shares her Cub Reporter Experience.
Every Wednesday, my 3rd grade class looks forward to reading The Cub Reporter. We love to see which student or class has asked a question that Aubie has answered! We have learned about muscles, tornadoes, airbags, eagles, volcanoes, Antarctica, veins in the body, Presidents, and stars in the sky! There was such a wide range of topics; each week was a little mini-lesson on something that was always interesting! Most of the time, I would pose the question to my class before reading the answer. We always had some interesting and creative answers! Matthew Kisor says, “It was cool how some kids gave questions to the paper that other kids would try to answer, besides Aubie.”
While we were studying the Human Body, our class asked about muscles. Our class question was answered during our study-perfect timing! We were vey excited to see ourselves in the paper. Madison Nutt said, “We are the most famous class!” (We had appeared in a December article for our class contributing to Toys for Toys for our Holiday Party.) Carson Crum says, “It was awesome to write to the paper and learn about stuff that you never learned before from someone else besides your teacher!”
It’s always neat to appear in the paper! Friends and family love to see you there, also! Our Newspapers in Education and Cub Reporter are a wonderful opportunity that all educators should use to their advantage. Whether you send in a question or read from other questions, there is knowledge abound! The newspaper is a great resource to use in the classroom.
